Wine Value

Over the years, our tastes have changed, our palates have matured and our earning potential has grown.  As we spent money on thousands of bottles of wine, we needed a way to evaluate the wine's purchase power over us. So, we established a simple primer for evaluating the thousands of wines we were tasting.

You'll notice that each wine we tasted will have 2 or 3 amounts next to it. (e.g. $24/$20/$34) This is the tool we use while we taste help us decide which wines are worth whipping out the credit card, and allocating space in the back of the Prius.  It breaks down to three numbers:
  • Retail Price
  • Club Price
  • Guilt-free bottle Price (our valuation of the wine)
The best way we've found to value wine is to decide what price we would pay for a bottle and not feel guilty about it. The best thing about this approach is that when you get it home, you're less likely to think twice before opening it. Nothing could be better than not worrying about the expense of a bottle before opening it. What's harder is deciding if you're worthy of the bottle and the wine in it!

Note, that if you see a "$-" in a spot, we either didn't know (or didn't calculate) the club price (some places don't have clubs, at all), or we couldn't come up with a "guilt-free price" because we just wouldn't buy it for any price.
